Sprinkler Check

As spring unfolds, it is essential to check your sprinkler systems. Winter months have been known for gremlins and other creatures making their home in lawns and terrorizing sprinkler systems. Dogs and squirrels are also offenders; they like to chew on the sprinkler heads. You should inspect your system each spring to make sure they are functioning correctly. If not, some of your plants will suffer. Pick a warm day and have someone inside put the timer through its paces while you watch all the stations and mark any problems with wire flags. Below are some other items to check:
- Check clocks to make sure they are set to the right time. Time changes and power outages can cause the timers to be off.
- Sprinkler heads get blocked due to recent years’ growth, so trim plants or put an extender on the riser.
- Pipes can get broken under the soil line due to changes in the soil moisture or because something is rammed into one of the risers.
- Check to make sure valves are closing correctly. Wet spots often appear at the lowest head station, but it could be a valve causing the issue from a different location, running downward.
